While Government and the GMO industry say these new crops are environmentally safe and that there’s no nutritional difference between GMOs and conventional crops. I am for labeling of GMO foods, because GMOs contain foreign genes for which the harmful side-effects are largely unknown. This is much different than selective breeding or hybridization. Also, we should have the right to know what’s in our food, and labeling is highly recommended for the customers purchasing products.

Today, most of the food people consume will likely contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients. Consumers could think what they’re eating is healthy for them, but they don’t even know what’s really inside of the food they’re putting in their bodies. According to the “Whole foods says…,” all foods in the North America that contain genetically modified foods will require labeling by 2018 because the use of GM foods is increasing (Choi and Perrone). Many people are agreeing that GMOs should be labeled because GMOs are becoming a problem to the environment, human health and the secrets.

I am for labeling of GMO foods because GMOs contain foreign genes for which the harmful side-effects are largely unknown. This is much different than selective breeding or hybridization, It has been proven that there has never been a single long-term safety study conducted on any GMO. Also, animal studies have shown that GMOs cause sterility within three generations. Recent rat studies show enormous tumors on the rats that have been tested and fed with GMO. Being proven by registered dietitian Carole Bartolotto, that GMOs are created by forcing a piece of DNA from a totally different species, such as bacteria or viruses, into the DNA of a plant or animal. This factual evidence supports the claim that GMO processed foods are harmful in a way, maybe not towards us humans yet but animals. Studies been shown that their is some unknown substance that’s sterilizing the foods.

Additionally, we should have the right to know what’s in our food. The bottom line is that we have a product in our food supply with unknown health and environmental suggestions. At the very least, we should have these foods labeled. However, no matter how hard we try, we cannot make that happen in the U.S. Proven from the “Huffington Post,” though 9 out of the 10 people want them labeled, the biotech companies and food manufacturers do not. “Since their products are supposively beneficial and safe, why can’t we label them? Why not be proud of your product?”, dietitian Bartolotto inquires. Over 60 countries, including China, label GMOs and some countries ban them. Nonetheless, we know if a food has trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, or is being permeated. So why can’t we know if our foods are being genetically engineered are the questions waiting to be answered by the public.

Finally, the most important reason I am for labeling of GMO foods is that it has nothing to do with excessive government intervention and regulations, but has everything to do with the promoting of honesty and clarity. More than 90 percent of Americans in numerous surveys have indicated they support mandatory GMO labeling, says medical director Dr. Stan. Many people are agreeing that GMO’s should be labeled because GMOs are becoming problematic to the environment and human health. To prevent this from happening, the government requires companies to test for potential allergic reactions.

Indeed, while Government and the GMO industry say these new crops are environmentally safe and that there’s no nutritional difference between GMOs and conventional crops, I am for labeling of GMO foods. It seems that GMO supporters do not want consumers to know the truth about GM food. The GM critics say that supporters of GM foods want us to believe that there is nothing wrong with GM ingredients. Yet, they pay millions to keep their secret from the public, leaving consumers even more concerned.
