These days the crime rate among juveniles has been increasing day by day. Some people think that the reason why crime rates have been rising is because of the way that is used to punish criminal young people. They assert that if criminal youth are made to do community service and learn to feel and behave responsible again instead of rehabilitated in reform schools, the proportion of youth in crime will eminently decrease. On the other hand, some people say that this method will just enhance the crime rate, not reduce. As far as I am concerned, young people who are involved in crime should attend community service and they can become reasonable in turn.

First of all, proponents of the view that young people who commit a crime should be punished in correction houses maintain that if the punishment is deterring enough, punished criminals will not be able to opt for the way they commit crime again. They may have a point. However, in correction houses, juveniles are just more exposed to crime. Nobody tells them how they get rid of the hole of crime and become a decent and responsible one. For instance, when a teenager stays in reform school, probably some bullies intimidate him for money by thread of beating him, or he encounters lots of fights between youth. Given being exposed to such incidents, it will be hard to be innocent in correction houses for adolescents. Which demonstrates that retribution of adolescents just raises the tendency of committing crime.

Secondly, some people still claim that if a person irresponsible enough to be involved in crime can’t do responsible community service either. They assume that there is no research about whether community service is effective or not. The contrary, there are vast amount of researches that indicate how efficient community service is. One of these researches show that among criminal adolescents who attended community service, 70% of them never commit a single crime after doing community service. The other researches also show similar rates. Therefore, the public are in need of community service to keep the country safe.

To sum up, The proportion of youth who are involved in crime is sky-high at present. Thereby solving this issue, some changes should be done instantly or it can be too late to save youth from the world of crime.
