I am going to compare Sunrise over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers and Mother to son By Langston Hughes.Sunrise over Fallujah is about a guy named Robin Aka “birdy” and he was sent to iraq and is the civilian affairs Battalion. As they are trying to secure and stabilize iraq. And doing so they will help the iraq people. They call there operation Iraqi Freedom. Mother to son by Langston Hughes. Mother to son is told in a third person view as the mom is talking to the son about how hard life has been and how he should not give up no matter how hard times get . Both Sunrise over fallujah and Mother to son have two lenes in common which are historical and multicultural lens as well as the reader’s response lens.

Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

    It’s had tacks in it,

    And splinters,

    And boards torn up,

And places with no carpet on the floor—

    Bare.

    But all the time

    I’se been a-climbin’ on,

    And reachin’ landin’s,

    And turnin’ corners,

And sometimes goin’ in the dark

Where there ain’t been no light.

So boy, don’t you turn back.

Don’t you set down on the steps

Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.

    Don’t you fall now—

    For I’se still goin’, honey,

    I’se still climbin’,

And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”

This poem was written in 1922 one of his very very many first poems. There was still a lot of racism in the united States and people were not being treated fairly. In this poem the mother is taliking to his son about not giving up when times get hard and when he feels like giving up to keep on going cause things will only get better. I think i compare this poem to Sunrise over Fallujah because even in the book they are at war and trying to fix affairs which is bad because it’s like them going against their own people during a time of war not choosing side.

For example “ we, the Civil affairs team, will be on board to see what the Iraqi non-combatants needs so that we can begin the rebuilding process as soon as possible.” They are trying to help out the people in the iraq so that they can so that they can create a successful democracy in some type of way and they are willing to do whatever it takes to do so which means they will not give at any point. But at I could see why the Iraqi people would help/work with the Americans because there countrie is already being destroyed and they just want peace but it can only happen if they work together and don’t give up they goal of creating a successful democracy. Overall these two pieces of literature are similar to me in a way because they both talk about not giving up and how they should keep pushing to reach a goal.
